Sheeran was performing at a fundraiser for East Anglia Children’s Hospices when he mentioned what he’s been up to on his break.
“It’s nice to be back. I’ve had a whole year off. I went to Japan for about a month and hung out with Japanese people,” he said. “Got my face cut open, anyone read about that?”
The good-natured artist was referencing a recent accident that happened when Princess Beatrice accidentally slashed his face open at a party–with a sword.
A source had previously stated, “As the night wore on they started talking about honors and apparently James Blunt joked that he would love a knighthood. Beatrice jokingly said she could arrange it and fetched a ceremonial sword. Beatrice held the sword above him and said, ‘Arise, Sir James.'”
Unfortunately, wielding a sword is tricky business, and poor Ed Sheeran was in the wrong place at the wrong time.
The source continued, “She must have misjudged the weight or something and, instead of lightly tapping him on the shoulder, she swung it back, not knowing Ed was standing right behind her.”
The sword caught Sheeran in the cheek, but he remained calm so he wouldn’t upset Beatrice any further. He wound up needing a few stitches, but ultimately returned to the party.
Ed Sheeran was obviously keeping his spirit up about the whole situation, and his performance for the fundraiser featured all his greatest hits. This included the song he wrote for Justin Bieber, “Love Yourself.”
In an awesome twist, he changed the lyrics to be a bit naughtier. Instead of “love yourself,” he said “f— yourself,” amongst other little changes.
