There were plenty of highlights, with Justin Bieber, Martin Garrix and Lady Gaga each pulling in the most victories at two each. Bieber was nominated for a third (Best Male), but ended up losing to social media star Shawn Mendes.
Bebe Rexha hosted the EMAs, and things got serious for a moment when she revealed that this year’s trophies were colored purple in honor of Prince, who passed away in April.
Unfortunately, Beyonce had kind of a bum night. She was nominated in five different categories, but didn’t end up winning anything at all. That’s got to sting a bit, but considering all the recognition she gets elsewhere, she’s probably not too miffed.
One performance that left everybody cheering came from The Weeknd, who performed his song “Starboy” ft. Daft Punk.
Here are the other artists who hit it big at the MTV EMAs:
Best song – Justin Bieber – Sorry
Best female – Lady Gaga
Best male – Shawn Mendes
Best video – The Weeknd ft Daft Punk – Starboy
Best live act – Twenty One Pilots
Best new act – Zara Larsson
Best pop act – Fifth Harmony
Best rock act – Coldplay
Best UK and Ireland act – Little Mix
Best push – DNCE
Best look – Lady Gaga
Best world stage – Martin Garrix
Best electronic – Martin Garrix
Best hip hop Act – Drake
Best fans – Justin Bieber
Global icon – Green Day
It’s interesting to see where certain artists overlap with European and American audiences. Clearly electronic music is continuing to grow in popularity, and we doubt Martin Garrix is going anywhere anytime soon. Beyonce’s losses and Justin Bieber’s continued popularity are a bit more surprising.
