Lady Gaga was visiting the homeless shelter as part of the #ShareKindness campaign, which was organized by Today and NBC Universal. The campaign aims to celebrate kind acts everywhere, no matter how small.
“I have a mental illness and I struggle with that mental illness every day. My own trauma in my own life has helped me to understand the trauma of others,” Gaga shared with the kids.
The specific trauma she was referencing was first revealed when she gave an interview with Howard Stern in 2014. In that interview, Lady Gaga discussed getting raped as a 19-year-old. Since then, she’s been an advocate against sexual assault, and her song “‘Til It Happens to You” has become an anthem in support of rape and assault victims everywhere.
Despite opening up about her previous trauma, Lady Gaga has never exposed how it is still affecting her life every day.
“I told the kids today, ‘I suffer from PTSD.’ I’ve never told anyone that before. So here we are,” she said.
