Popstar Diva 2006 Redux
Interscope revealed through their PlayIGA site that Fergie’s “L.A. Love (La La)” will be coming September 22, with Stefani’s “Baby Don’t Lie” to come just two weeks later. With two newsworthy releases in the works, the label is betting on an exciting holiday season.
Aside from some one-off performances and singles, both women have been away from the spotlight as solo artists for roughly eight years. We’ve heard from each of them in their work with the bands that made them famous, though: No Doubt released Push and Shove in 2006 and Black Eyed Peas‘ latest was 2010’s The E.N.D.
The big question is whether audiences will be willing to welcome the singers back after their long absences. It’s already going to be a crowded Q4 for female pop stars, with massive releases on the way from Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj.
The last time two pop divas went head-to-head with competing releases, Katy Perry’s “Roar” and Prism, which won handily over Lady Gaga’s “Applause” and ARTPOP. It’s inevitable that Fergie and Gwen Stefani’s releases will be framed as another battle to the death. The odds are in favor of Fergie, who has always been a more consistent singles artist, but at the end of the day, it’s still anyone’s game.
