In a tragic Christmas Day discovery, Michael’s partner Fadi Fawaz found Michael dead in bed that morning.
“We were supposed to be going for Christmas lunch. I went round there to wake him up and he was just gone, lying peacefully in bed,” Fawaz stated. “Everything had been very complicated recently, but George was looking forward to Christmas, and so was I. Now everything is ruined. I want people to remember him the way he was. He was a beautiful person.”

With hit songs like “Wake Me Up Before You Go Go” and two Grammy awards for Album of the Year and Best Rhythm & Blues Vocal Performance, George Michael’s music career left a lasting impression on pop music in the decades to come. However, it was his activism that made him an even more prominent figure.
In 1998, Michael revealed that he was gay, and used his position in the spotlight to become one of the most prominent stars speaking up for gay rights. One of his music videos even highlighted the fact that he had been fined for performing a “lewd act” in a restroom after a police sting operation. The video for “Outside” satirized the incident by showing policemen kissing each other. From that moment on, he became politically active and unabashed about speaking his mind.
Many fans, including celebrities, are remembering George Michael for his activism and influence in music.
