One Direction, comprised of members Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, Niall Horan and formerly Zayn Malik, first got their start on The X Factor with the help of judge Simon Cowell. They each auditioned as solo candidates, but Cowell had the idea of putting them together in a group instead.
They finished third on that season of The X Factor and went on to become hits with teen girls everywhere. Unfortunately, according to X Factor judge Louis Walsh, the boy band’s quick rise to fame was nothing but trouble.
“Too much money, too much success too quickly,” Walsh said. “Simon created monsters and that was it. They all think they’re going to be solo stars. They’re not.”
When asked if he thought any of the boys could make it as a solo act, Louis Walsh wasn’t optimistic about their chances.
“Only Harry. That’s it,” Walsh said. “Then they’ll be sorry they broke up and it’ll be too late because there’s another boy band. That’s what always happens in boy bands.”
